Call to nationalise works of scholar Somalay  Feb 14, 11
 
SIVAGANGA: The State Government has been urged to take steps to nationalise the books written by the late Tamil scholar, Somalay.

Speaking at a function organised by the Somalay Foundation to celebrate the 90th birth anniversary of the scholar, at Somalay Memorial Branch Library at Nerkuppai near here, Mr. Thamizhannal, a noted Tamil scholar said Mr. Somalay had written 95 books on several aspects. The books on topics ranging from folklore and district gazettes to travelogues were classics in documentation that needed to be reprinted and made more accessible to the younger generation.

“Encourage talents”

The Superintendent of Libraries for Sivaganga district, Karthikeyan, said schools in rural areas should work closely with local libraries to broaden the academic skills of students and encourage the innate talents in them.

While distributing prizes to more than 100 students from local area schools who had won in the drawing, oratorical, and essay contests, Mr. Karthikeyan said that a strong bond between the branch libraries and local schools was critical for the overall rural development.

S. Amalraj, Assistant Education Officer, Sivagangai District complimented the Somalay Memorial Branch Library for interacting with the schools and mentioned that the education directorate was working towards introducing a “library period” in the curriculum and such an initiative would further encourage such partnership between the libraries and schools.

While appreciating the efforts of Somalay Foundation for constructing a building at an estimated cost of Rs.12 lakh, N. Kesavan, District Library Officer, said the people should utilise libraries to acquire knowledge.

Somalay Somasundaram of the Foundation said that the Somalay Memorial Branch Library would work closely with the Directorate of Libraries for its initiative to maximise the usage of libraries. LM. Lakshmanan of the foundation took part.
