CHENNAI: The service rendered by the Chettinad Raja family towards education were recalled by speakers at a function organised here on Friday by the Presidency College Alumni Association in connection with the 105th birth anniversary of Raja Sir M.A.Muthiah Chettiar.

S.Mohan, president of the association, described Muthiah Chettiar as a multi-faceted personality.

Apart from his contribution to education, Muthiah Chettiar was a well-known proponent of Tamil and Tamil music.

He was also a good orator who successfully put forth his argument against compulsory introduction of Hindi in the State in the Assembly. Despite winning many awards and getting honours, Muthiah Chettiar was humility personified.

Industrialist N.Mahalingam said Muthiah Chettiar was instrumental in his shaping as an industrialist by arranging for a bank loan for his first venture.

As a Pro-Chancellor of the Annamalai University, he was able to bring in many doyens as Vice-Chancellors of the university.

The former State Minister, H.V.Hande; S.Jagadeesan, vice-president of the association; Kaliaperumal, Principal of the college; and AR.Ramaswamy, honorary secretary of the Raja Sir Annamalai Chettiar Trust, listed measures initiated by Muthiah Chettiar for making education accessible to the poor.
