CHENNAI: Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar Memorial Trust on Wednesday conferred the Dr. Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar Birthday Commemoration Award for 2009 on Tamil scholar L.P.Kr. Ramanathan Chettiar for his contributions to the growth of Tamil Isai. The award comprising cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh, citation, silver plaque and shawl was presented by Madras High Court Judge K.N. Basha.

Prof. Ramanathan recalled his association with Sir Rajah Annamalai Chettiar and said it was the latter, who was instrumental in getting him involved in Tamil Isai. “I have been working on Pannisai for the last 60 years. I was awarded the Pannisai Kavalar title during the 50th year and this award is given during 60th year,” he said. He requested M.A.M. Ramaswamy, Pro-chancellor of Annamalai University and patron of the Trust to take steps to republish old books. Justice Basha said the jury had selected right person for the award. Mr. Ramaswamy said Prof. Ramanathan was associated with his family for more than 70 years.M.A.M.R. Muthiah, president of the Trust and Secretary, AR. Ramaswamy spoke.
