Address proof cards at all post offices  Dec 31, 09
 
From Friday, address proof cards issued by the Postal Department could be collected from the delivery post office under whose jurisdiction the applicants reside. Hitherto, the applicants have to go to the respective Head Post Office or the Sub Post Office to get the cards.

Briefing media persons here on Thursday, Senior Superintendent of Posts (Chennai City North Division) Kalaiyarasi Raamaswamy said the address proof card was launched at select post offices in Chennai city in October 2008.

In view of the good response to the scheme, it has been decided that from January 1 all the 128 delivery post offices in city would sell the application forms and issue the cards.

This card is accepted as a valid document by various State government departments such as the Police Department, Election Commission of Tamil Nadu and the Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection department. Residents could use the card to get driving licence, ration card and for opening bank accounts, she said.

“We are expecting that the card would be accepted for the purpose of getting a passport and domestic LPG connections. The cards are issued after due verification by the staff of our department,” Ms.Raamaswamy said.

Nearly 27,000 postal address proof cards have been issued in the city divisions, including Tambaram, between April 2009 and November 2009. Of this, 5,271 were issued in north division.

The revenue earned by the postal department through issue of the cards in the city divisions is Rs.77 lakh. The number of cards to be issued is expected to increase five fold in 2010, she added.

The card priced at Rs.250 each, which includes the cost of the application too, is valid for three years.
