Bharathi Award for M.A.M. Ramaswamy  Sep 12, 09
 
CHENNAI: This year’s Mahakavi Bharathi Award, instituted by the Bharathiyar Sangam, was presented to industrialist M.A.M. Ramaswamy here on Friday.

In his absence, A.R. Ramaswamy, honorary secretary of the Raja Sir Annamalai Chettiar Memorial Trust, received the award from Union Shipping Minister G.K. Vasan. The Minister also gave away special awards to 21 people for their contribution towards propagation of Bharathi’s works.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Vasan said Bharathi had sown the seeds of freedom struggle among people and inspired them through his literary works.

He created awareness among people about country’s freedom, women’s liberation, economic freedom and eradication of caste system.

Presiding over the function, industrialist N. Mahalingam appealed to Mr. Vasan to ensure translation of the works of Bharathi into all Indian languages.

R. Gandhi, president, said the Sangam, which had completed 60 years, honoured scholars with the Bharathi Award every year.
