The construction of buildings for the Sivaganga medical college would be started in January, said Collector Mahesan Kasirajan.

Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, he said that Rs.97 crore had been earmarked for the project. The construction of the 500-bed hospital, administrative block, classrooms, laboratory and hostel buildings were among the proposed project.

In the first phase buildings for housing 300 beds and other infrastructural facilities would be completed. The Government decided to start the college from the next (2010-11) academic year. Hence, the construction would be completed within a year. The second phase of construction of buildings for 200 beds would be taken up after that.

Mr. Kasirajan said besides the two existing emergency maternity centres in the district, two more centres had been sanctioned at Manamadurai and Devakottai for which eight doctors and 12 nurses have been sanctioned. The performance of the centres had gone up gradually in the district. As many as 333 deliveries were performed in the centres last month as against the average of 150. A total of 1423 women gave birth at the centres in 2008-09.He added that the district had received six “108 ambulances” out of 12. The services offered by the ambulances were commendable. As many as 387 patients had been sent to various hospitals through these ambulances.

The Collector added that a sum of Rs.12.34 crore had been allotted for creating new infrastructural facilities in various hospitals, including Karaikudi, Devakottai, Thirupattur and others. Of the total amount, a sum of Rs.3.29 crore had been sanctioned for the district hospital in Sivaganga was put on hold due to the sanctioning of medical college. Officials were asked to complete the work within the stipulated period.

Raid
Mr. Kasirajan said that health officials would conduct surprise raids in hotels, motels, restaurants and others to check whether the preparation of food and beverages was in compliance with norms. The toilets would also be inspected by officials. Similarly, surprise raids would be carried out in mineral water companies in Karaikudi and other places to check whether they were adhering to the standards listed by the government in producing mineral water.

He added that a study would be conducted to analyse the reasons for frequent outbreak of diarrhoea in and around Manamadurai and Thiruppuvanam.
