1 killed, 32 hurt in Varanasi blast  Dec 7, 10

A two-year-old girl was killed and at least 32 others, including a couple of foreigners, injured in a blast at the Dashashwamedh Ghat here during Ganga arati around 6.30 p.m. today.

Official sources said an improvised explosive device (IED) was recovered from a metal dustbin at the blast site. The blast was said to be of low intensity.

A stampede followed soon after the blast and many persons suffered injuries in the stampede. Some persons also suffered injuries due to metal pellets.

The terror organisation Indian Mujahideen (IM) has claimed responsibility for the blast in e-mails sent to media organisations. The IM has “attributed” the attack to the demolition of Babri masjid in 1992.

The e-mail has been traced to Mumbai.

Home Minister P Chidambaram has said the veracity of the mail was being investigated
