About 900 family members of Nagarathars, the dominant local community congregated in this nondescript village for “Sevvai Pongal,” the traditional Pongal festival, celebrated on the first Tuesday of Tamil month ‘Thai.’
Though a majority of the community members have moved out of the village and settled in different parts of the country and the world, they converge here on this day every year to offer worship at the famous 18th century Kannathal Temple, meet the relatives and finalise marriage proposals.
“Every year, the 20 ‘vagayaras’ of Nagarathars assemble here as per the nearly 90-year-long tradition to celebrate Sevvai Pongal and offer worship at the Kannathal temple,”
The festival began at 4. 30 p.m and went on till late in the night. Other community people living in the village and surrounding villages were also allowed to take part in the festival but they were allotted slots outside the main arena. |
