Maha sivarathiri is observed in honour of Lord Shiva

People observe a strict fast on this day. They keep vigil all night. The Shiva Lingam is worshipped throughout the night by abishegam in every three hours with milk, curd, honey, rose water, etc., the chanting of the Mantra Om Namah Shivaya continues.

Offerings of bael leaves are made to the Lingam. Bael leaves are very sacred as, it is said, Lakshmi resides in them.

If we utter the Names of Shiva during Shivaratri, with perfect devotion and concentration, will be freed from all sins and from the wheel of births & deaths.

Nagarathars carry their infants around the kuladeivam temple, in a cradle tied to sugarcane sticks (கரும்புத் தொட்டில்) to fulfil their wishes.
